Victory in Lubbock

LUBBOCK — Junior Jaron Morgin finished third in a field of 118 runners Saturday as Clovis High’s boys took the team title in the Lubbock Invitational cross country meet.

Morgin ran a time of 16 minutes, 13 seconds as the Wildcats’ first five runners finished in the top 20. Senior Justin Netcher was fifth overall, posting a time of 16:25.

The Cats finished with 54 team points to 87 for runnerup Fort Worth Coppell in a field of 17 full teams.

“We’re just real proud of the boys,” CHS coach Mike Hankins said. “It’s the first time we’ve ever gone in here and won the meet.

It’s a neat meet because there are so many teams. It kind of has the atmosphere of a state meet.”

Clovis’ girls finished 10th out of 15 full teams with 228 points. Odessa Permian took the team championship at 60, two points ahead of Coppell.

Senior Caitlin Waters led the Lady Wildcats, placing seventh in a time of 12:22 over two miles. The winner was Ashley Flores of Haltom City, Texas (11:24).

“The girls actually ran pretty well, too,” Hankins said. “We’re still a little nicked up right now.”

Hankins said his squads are trying to build momentum as the season goes.

“We’re still working toward our goal of winning district,” he said. “Both teams are working really hard.”

Coach Hankins:  “We’re just real proud of the boys,” CHS coach Mike Hankins said. “It’s the first time we’ve ever gone in here and won the meet."
