Results From The 2011 Clovis Invitational — Maddie McNaughton and Gladys Miranda were both a little surprised by their finishes in Friday’s season-opening Clovis Invitational cross country meet at Ned Houk Park — especially given the heat.
McNaughton finished fourth and Miranda sixth to lead the Lady Wildcats to a third-place team finish with 86 points, two ahead of Hobbs and four behind second-place Amarillo High. Rio Rancho Cleveland had five of the top 12 individuals and ran away with team honors with 38 points.
Amarillo Tascosa finished with 32 points to edge Cleveland by three for boys honors. Meantime, the CHS boys tied with Hobbs for fourth at 117, but earned the higher team finish by virtue of a better place for their No. 6 runner.
Making the girls’ showing more impressive was the fact that perhaps their top runner, junior Brittany Collins, did not compete on Friday because of a knee problem.
“It was a great day,” CHS coach Mike Hankins said of the girls’ showing. “This was a tough meet. Maddie ran a great race, and Gladys did too.
“That’s what senior leaders should do. It was so hot out here; it was just a tough day to race.”
Neither McNaughton, who finished in 19 minutes, 57 seconds, nor Miranda, who clocked 20:11, was exactly sure what to expect.
“We just went out and did our best,” McNaughton said. “It wasn’t the best weather, but there were some clouds (occasionally blocking the sun). And everyone is running in the same heat.”
McNaughton said it’s been a long time since she’s broken the 20-minute barrier.
“I just wanted to run under 20, and I got that done,” she said.
Miranda set her goal at under 21 minutes — a mark she shattered.
“I haven’t run at 20 in a long time, so that’s pretty good for me, especially for the first meet,” she said.
Junior Chase Beausoleil and senior Brandon Gutierrez went 11-14 to lead the CHS boys, posting respective times of 16:41 and 16:43. Beausoleil, a transfer from Las Vegas, Nev., was running his first meet for the Wildcats while Gutierrez easily ran a personal best.
“The boys had a real good day,” Hankins said. “Brandon ran the best time of his life by about 35 seconds.”
Individual winners were Luis Martinez of Cleveland for the boys in 15:11 and Miah Nelson of Odessa Permian for the girls in 19:25.
Clovis squads return to action next Saturday in the Plainview Invitational, set for 9 a.m. (MDT).
