2011 District Meet

Results From The 2011 District Meet — Clovis High’s girls, running a bit shorthanded, mustered up enough points to win. Meantime, the CHS boys came up just short.

Seniors Gladys Miranda and Maddie McNaughton ran 1-2 and the back end of the lineup came up big as well as the Lady Wildcats scored 31 points to 32 for Hobbs in Friday’s District 4-5A cross country meet at Ned Houk Park. Carlsbad was a distant third at 67.

Hobbs took boys competition, finishing with 27 points to 28 for the Wildcats and 85 for Carlsbad.

Miranda covered the three-mile course in 18 minutes, 45 seconds, while McNaughton followed at an even 19 minutes. Junior Brittany Collins was fourth while freshman Alissa Mastronardi placed 10th and sophomore Danielle O’Leary, a last-minute addition to give the Lady Cats six runners with senior Amy Miranda and sophomore Rebekah Gallop away because of a band activity, came in 14th.

“I don’t know if it was good coaching or bad coaching,” CHS Coach Mike Hankins said of adding O’Leary, who splits time for the Lady Cats between soccer and cross country, “but it worked.”

It turned out to be just enough.

“What can I say about the girls? Wow,” Hankins, adding that Miranda and McNaughton had set a goal earlier this season of finishing 1-2 in the district. “We came in hoping for the stars to align, and they did.”

Miranda jumped out early and never looked back.

Literally.

“Everybody was cheering for other girls,” Miranda said. “It felt like they were right behind me, so I didn’t look back.

“It feels good; that’s the way we hoped it would go. As a team, we worked really hard.”

McNaughton held off Hobbs senior Andrea Wittman for second, while Collins was one second behind Wittman.

“It was a hard race, but it was good,” McNaughton said. “Everyone ran well; I was proud of all our girls.”

She said she and Wittman have gone back-and-forth in head-to-head meetings this year.

“I could hear her behind me,” McNaughton said. “It was just an intense race.”

Hobbs and Clovis took the top 10 places on the boys side. The Eagles finished 1-2 with juniors Seraiah Pineda and Joseph Flotte, and it was just enough.

“Hats off to Hobbs and coach (Bob) Jackson,” Hankins said. “Their No. 2 (Flotte) put the dagger in us today. He went out and made it happen.

“Our boys ran well. That’s the one I thought we had a chance to win, team-wise.”

Pineda’s winning time was 15:26. Senior Kevin Dallas was third for the Cats at 16:15, while junior Chase Beausoliel ran fourth at 16:19.

Next for the Cats is the State Competition this weekend at Rio Rancho High School in Albuquerque.
