Results From The 2011 Highland Invitational — Led by junior Chase Beausoleil and senior Kevin Dallas for the boys and seniors Maddie McNaughton and Gladys Miranda for the girls, Clovis High’s cross country teams finished third behind Class 4A power Albuquerque Academy and Class 5A power Sandia in Friday’s Highland Invitational.
Beausoleil covered the five-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 49 seconds for 10th place while Dallas was 12th in 16:52. In girls competition, McNaughton was fifth in 19:48 and Miranda sixth in 19:52.
“Sandia’s definitely a team in the hunt in 5A,” CHS coach Mike Hankins said. “Our boys and girls really ran well today. Our girls ran close to them and we’re still without (injured senior) Brittany (Collins).”
Academy finished with 35 points to 47 for Sandia and 115 for Clovis in boys competition, and had 37 points to 72 for the Matadors and 83 for the Lady Wildcats on the girls side.
Jesus Estrada of Atrisco Heritage for the boys and Katie Jackson of Albuquerque High for the girls were individual winners.
Hankins said the boys’ top three runners, including senior Brandon Gutierrez (16th in 17 minutes), are solid, but there’s a gap behind them at this point.
“Our top three are running extremely well,” he said. “We’ve just got to close the gap with our fourth and fifth runners.”
CHS returns to action next Saturday in the Ron Singleton Invitational at Carlsbad, starting at 10 a.m.
