Results From The 2011 Hobbs Invite —Senior Brandon Gutierrez led a strong Clovis High showing with a second-place finish and the Wildcats took the team title on Thursday in the Hobbs Invitational cross country meet.
The Cats tallied 35 team points while Odessa High won a tiebreaker with Hobbs for second place after both teams finished with 49,
Meantime, senior Gladys Miranda was the girls individual winner as the Lady Wildcats finished third in team standings at 50, trailing Hobbs (42) and Odessa High (45).
Gutierrez ran a time of 16 minutes, 40 seconds over three miles, trailing Hobbs’ Seraiah Pineda (15:43). Kevin Dallas (16:47) and Ty Carroll (16:51) finished 4-5 as the Cats had all seven of their runners in the top 20.
Clovis coach Mike Hankins said the Cats showed improvement after finishing second to Hobbs in Saturday’s Roswell Invitational.
“Today, the boys came out and ran really well,” he said. “Brandon had a great day today, and Ty and Kevin ran well too. We came out a little more focused than last week.”
For Miranda, it was her first race victory, 21 seconds ahead of teammate and runnerup Maddie McNaughton.
“Gladys ran this course like 2 minutes, 20 seconds faster than last year,” Hankins said. “Maddie has been fighting a muscle pull in her quad, and it shows how tough she is.”
Clovis teams return to action on Oct. 22 in the Ruidoso Invitational, scheduled for a 10 a.m. start, in their final regular-season outing.
