10/29/10 Hobbs, NM — Clovis High’s boys had just enough to hold off Hobbs for the District 4-5A cross country championship on Friday. Junior Kevin Dallas made a late push to finish fourth and the Wildcats finished with 28 team points to 30 for Hobbs in the three-school competition. Carlsbad was a distant third with 78. Meantime, the host Lady Eagles took the girls championship with 32 points to 50 for Clovis and 51 for Carlsbad.

Senior Colton Dant ran second overall with a time of 16 minutes, 1 second over three miles for the Clovis boys. Sophomore Gene Snell (16:21) finished third for the Wildcats, while Dallas (16:30) made a strong push late to overhaul a Hobbs runner for fourth. “Hobbs just ran real well, but I’m obviously proud of the boys,” CHS coach Mike Hankins said. “Kevin Dallas stands out; he had to sprint at the end to beat a (Hobbs runner) for fourth.

“If he doesn’t do that, we end up tied and Hobbs wins on a tiebreaker (higher sixth-runner finish).”

Hobbs’ Julian Flores was the individual winner in 15:39.

“Julian’s just a good kid, and he works hard,” Hankins said. “You have to give him credit.”

Sophomore Brittany Collins was the top finisher for the Lady Wildcats, placing third in 19:38. Carlsbad’s Michaela Johnson was the winner in 19:11. Juinior Maddie McNaughton was fifth overall and second for the Lady Cats (19:52). One of the team’s top runners, junior Amy Miranda, battled stomach problems, Hankins said, and finished 12th in 21:20.

Hankins said the boys are shooting for a trophy (top-three finish) in next week’s state meet at Rio Rancho after finishing eighth last year. Meantime, the girls will try to improve on last year’s 10th-place showing.

“The girls still have a chance (to do well),” Hankins said. “Hobbs is one of the top three or four teams in the state.”
