Results From The 2011 State Meet — With the exception of the Albuquerque-area schools, Clovis High’s cross country teams did fairly well in Saturday’s Class 5A state meet.

Clovis finished seventh in girls competition with 164 points and eighth on the boys side with 187 in the meet. Except for Las Cruces-based Onate, seventh for the boys, the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats beat the rest of the state.

Senior Gladys Miranda finished 15th for the girls in a time of 20 minutes, 41 seconds over five kilometers, while junior Brittany Collins was 23rd (20:57) and senior Maddie McNaughton 26th (21:00). Still, coach Mike Hankins said his squad ran well in windy conditions with a mix of light rain and sleet falling during the early-morning run.

“That’s the best (team) finish the girls have had in a long time,” Hankins said. “The kids ran real well today. We can’t ask them to do any more than they’ve done.

“I think we’ve turned a corner in that we’re starting to believe we can compete up here.”

Rounding out scoring positions for the Lady Cats were freshman Alyssa Mastronardi, 45th with a time of 21:59, and sophomore Rebekah Gallop, who was 55th in 22:32.

For the boys, senior Kevin Dallas led the Wildcats in 30th place at 17:36, one spot ahead of senior Brandon Gutierrez (17:40). Five Clovis runners finished in the top 50 in a field of 114.

“We bunched up really good today,” Hankins said. “We just don’t have that kid that’s going to run in the top 15.”

Junior Chase Beausoleil was 35th in the meet with a time of 17:43, while senior Ty Carroll came in 43rd in 17:55 and sophomore Max Santarosa placed 48th in 18:01.

Rio Rancho Cleveland ran away with both team titles and both individual championships. The Storm finished with 33 points to 78 for La Cueva on the boys side, and 30 points to 56 for Eldorado in girls competition.

Hankins and his squads had hoped for higher finishes, but struggled a bit in the higher altitude.

“These kids competed really hard,” he said. “Both teams went out and just represented Clovis very well.”

From Coach Bussen: What a day for a Cross Country Championship race!  Girls raced at 9:30am in 40+ mph wind.  They had rain during the first mile and snow and sand during second and third miles.  Toughest race I have seen in High School Cross Country!!  Girls finished 7th (beat Hobbs again).

Boys ran at 11:30 in 30 mph winds.  Fortunately, no rain or snow. They were 26 seconds 1-5 but did not get out in the first mile.  The boys finished 30-48 places :). Team was 8th but got revenge on Hobbs as we beat them by 50 Pts!!

Everyone came to race and did a good job!  Here are the individual results from the 2011 State Competition:
