Ruidoso Invite

10/23/10 Ruidoso, New Mexico - CHS boys win at Ruidoso  Sophomore Gene Snell and Brittany Collins were individual winners Saturday in the Ruidoso Invitational cross country meet.

Clovis took the boys team championship, finishing with 64 points to 76 for runnerup Artesia. The Lady Wildcats, meantime, placed third with 125 points behind Carlsbad (69) and Estancia (90).

Snell posted a time of 17 minutes, 8 seconds for a course which was 3.03 miles, while senior Colton Dant finished third for the Clovis boys.

“Gene ran second until about the two-mile mark,” CHS coach Mike Hankins said. “There’s a hill at that point, and he passed the leader on that hill.”

The girls were without two of their top three runners in Amy Miranda (band function) and Maddie McNaughton (hip), but Collins stole the show in only her third race of the season due to an ankle problem.

“She not only won it, she ran an incredible time,” Hankins said. “This is a tough course.

“The boys ran real well today, and so did the girls (even though they were) shorthanded.”

Clovis teams travel to Hobbs for District 4-5A competition on Friday.
